When it comes to 4th of July Celebrations the adage “there is no place like home” definitely rings true for our family. Beach fireworks do not disappoint… and there’s plenty to do while you anticipate the late night start time(s)!
Chill Out with the Tastiest Red, White & Blue
Although grown ups love a long beach day, the kiddos can’t hang forever… the usual has to happen – naps, snacks, poops (yes, I just included poops into my first blog post!) On the day of the Fireworks show (it’s usually not on the 4th) we try to hit the beach in the afternoon. That means we have a day out & about doing things other than the beach. And let’s face it – it’s hot. It’s Florida & it’s July. I can suggest no better place to “chill out” then Oasis Shaved Ice. Always a favorite for us, it was the perfect place to cool down and get festive. We headed out for a little bit of “Freedom” in a cup (blue raspberry, cherry – stuffed & frosted – and, oh, so American)!
My little babes light up as we approach the place anticipating their sweet treat, of course, but also to race each other to the drawing boards! I might go as far to say this is the most kid-friendly *sweetery* in Cocoa Beach… the owner encourages the kiddos to color their hearts out on dry erase walls, use their imaginations driving in the vintage kroger car (can’t believe she stays so relaxed as they climb inside!), and she helps all the mama’s chase down their babes with wet-wipes in hand once the ice has melted onto their sweet little cheeks! (4 kiddos later this is a big deal! After all, it takes a village!) Did I mention it also serves as a mini-Cocoa Cola museum as it proudly displays an extensive collection throughout the shop – how cool is that?!
The Freedom flavor certainly was a win for us, but in case you’re wondering the combos are endless at Oasis (although her number one seller is Budderbeer–can’t even describe the yumminess with words!) And… drumroll goes here… they make all their own syrups with natural cane sugar and no high fructose corn syrup! How about that for a change?!!! Be sure to stop in on your next visit to Cocoa Beach (you can thank me later!)
Surf Cocoa Beach
We let the kiddos unwind a bit before getting our second wind for the beach – but if you’re hoping to beach it earlier in the day you should definitely try to squeeze in a surf lesson (or better yet a group surf lesson!) at School of Surf! They are just as patient with kiddos as they are with rookie-grown ups (I know from experience!) Owners, Todd Holland & Lauren McLean are ASP World Tour Veterans but they make you feel like you can be too (at least for an hour!) Lauren graciously made me feel like I had surf skills when I had a group of my friends join me for our first lesson (first as in EVER! ) Even if I only surfed that one hour of my life, it was so worth it to feel like I could ride a wave like a champ! All of us beach-loving folks should have an hour like that one!
Beach It Until The Grand Finale
This year, however, we made it to the beach around 4pm – had a picnic dinner, built drip castles, boogie boarded, body whomped (this is a real thing), and enjoyed the fireworks over the ocean. If you’re not local, you don’t want to arrive much later as parking was already sparse (with the exception of Lori Wilson Park, Cocoa Beach enforces metered parking). Our beach celebration was filled with food, fun, friends, and all the things that remind me of how thankful I am for my freedom.
Oh yeah… did I mention the fireworks?!!!
